Since the early 1980's, the original Transportation Company has grown to several uniquely structured Operating Subsidiaries of Smith Transport With the passage of the Motor Carrier Act of 1980, the Company obtained Nation-Wide Operating Authority of both Common and Contract services. Additionally, a Transportation Property Brokers License was obtained. Likewise, grants of Pennsylvania Intrastate Authority have been obtained to serve the unique needs of selected customers. The development of each Operating Subsidiary was carefully studied and planned to provide services to a targeted niche market and to help take the entire Smith Family of Corporations into the 21st Century.
In 1995, two key acquisitions were made that opened up new vistas and business opportunities for the Company. On April 1, 1995, D-Mask, a local carrier serving Westvaco in Luke, Maryland, was purchased. Commensurate with the acquisition of D-Mask, the assets of C.B. Finkle were purchased to facilitate the initiation of a complete package of Short-Haul Transportation and Jockey Services for the Westvaco Corporation of their Luke, Maryland Facility.
On September 2, 1995, the acquisition of M.G. Henninger Trucking was completed. M.G. Henninger provided dedicated trucking services to the Super-Rite Corporation located in Carlisle, PA. The purchase of this Business Unit opened the door for expansion of highly customized services to Super-Rite and greater penetration into the lucrative Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Logistics Market. The original Henninger fleet of 18 units was expanded to 70 power units by 1995 and now exceeds 100 Power Units.
The insertion of the Leadership style and expertise of the Smith Management Team has transformed these acquisitions into highly-focused service-oriented Business Units that are truly "Dedicated to Excellence" in serving their customers and achieving stated Corporate Goals and Objectives.
One of the fastest growing elements of the Business is the Contract Warehousing and Dedicated Logistics segment. The Company now has almost 3,000,000 square feet of modern high-clearance space strategically placed in seven(7) different locations in which to serve Dedicated Long-Tern Core Customers. Smith Transport provides a full line of completely Customized Logistics Services to these Highly Valued Business Partners.
